I was twelve, awkwardly clutching a cup of sunflower seeds, when a blue crowned conure leaned in, mimicked my sneeze, and stared me down like I was the weird one. That tiny moment equal parts comedy and curiosity was the spark that would shape the next two decades of my life.
Hi, I’m David Avery. I created Rational Parrot in 2025 not just as a blog, but as a place where parrot lovers could find answers that were practical, empathetic, and backed by real insight.
My fascination with parrots grew from that childhood encounter into a lifelong pursuit of understanding how they think, communicate, and live.
Over the years, I’ve studied hundreds of hours of behavioral science, volunteered with rescue shelters, consulted with avian specialists, and, most importantly, shared my home with a flock of highly intelligent (and often loud) parrots.
Through all that, one thing became clear: there’s a lot of misinformation out there about parrots and it can lead to frustration for people and suffering for birds. That’s why everything I publish here is rooted in both experience and research. I blend scientific studies, real-world case examples, and observations from my own flock to help demystify topics like screaming, bonding, feather plucking, diet, enrichment, and trust-building.
